Hardwood, vinyl plank and laminate, supplied and installed by one vetted installer.

For an 800 square foot main floor in Hamilton, a typical installed job runs **$8,000 to $13,200** ([Hamilton Home Costs, hardwood installation, verified 25 Jul 2026](https://hamiltonhomecosts.ca/cost/flooring/hardwood-installation/)) for hardwood, **$4,400 to $8,000** ([Hamilton Home Costs, vinyl plank installation, verified 25 Jul 2026](https://hamiltonhomecosts.ca/cost/flooring/lvp-installation/)) for vinyl plank, or **$3,200 to $6,000** ([Hamilton Home Costs, laminate installation, verified 25 Jul 2026](https://hamiltonhomecosts.ca/cost/flooring/laminate-installation/)) for laminate. Those are published estimator ranges from Hamilton Home Costs: a typical Hamilton job, mid-range materials, standard access, HST excluded. They are not a quote for your house.

## What drives the price

### The subfloor underneath

Hamilton's lower city has a lot of homes built before 1950, with wide-board or tongue-and-groove subfloors that have moved over seventy or eighty years. Some need levelling compound, a new plywood layer, or removal of old adhesive and nails before a new floor can go down flat. None of that shows up until the old floor comes up, which is why a phone quote is a guess and an in-home quote is not.

### Stairs

Stair treads, risers and nosing take far more labour per square foot than open floor, because every piece is cut and fitted by hand. A house with a full staircase to refloor costs meaningfully more than the same square footage of open room.

### Removal and disposal

Pulling out old carpet, tile or a failed floating floor and hauling it away is usually a separate line, priced by the room or by weight, not folded into the install rate.

### Species, grade and width

For hardwood, red oak costs less than white oak or walnut, and wider or longer boards cost more than standard strip. For vinyl plank and laminate, wear layer thickness and plank length move the material price without changing the labour much.

## What a quote should itemise

- Square footage measured in your home, not estimated from a listing
- Material, species or product line and wear layer or AC rating, named specifically
- Subfloor prep, and what triggers an extra charge if the installer finds a problem once the old floor is up
- Removal and disposal of the existing floor, if there is one
- Stairs, transitions and baseboard or shoe moulding, priced separately from open floor
- Timeline, and who moves furniture and appliances

## Permits in Hamilton

Replacing a floor finish, hardwood, laminate, carpet or vinyl, does not need a City of Hamilton building permit, according to the [City of Hamilton's building permit page](https://www.hamilton.ca/build-invest-grow/construction-renovation/residential-building-renovation/building-permit). A permit is required only if the work alters the subfloor structure, the joists, or the size of any opening, which is rare for a straight refloor and common for a basement that is being framed out at the same time.

## When to do it and how long it takes

Hardwood and laminate need to acclimate to the room for a few days before installation, so a rushed same-week job is a warning sign, not a selling point. An average main floor, 800 to 1,000 square feet without major subfloor repair, takes an installer two to four days. Winter installs are common in Hamilton because indoor humidity is more stable than in a hot, damp summer, which matters most for solid hardwood.

## Common questions

### Can one installer do hardwood, vinyl plank and laminate?

Yes. The flooring partner on this site supplies and installs all three, quoted by the owner in person rather than a call centre estimate.

### Do I need to move my own furniture?

That is a line item to confirm on the quote, not an assumption. Some jobs include it, some do not.

### What if the subfloor is bad once the old floor comes up?

A fair quote states in advance how subfloor repair is priced if it is found mid-job, rather than leaving it open-ended.

### Does 905 Trades charge me anything?

No. The contractor pays 905 Trades a referral fee once the job closes. Your price is the contractor's normal price.
